On April 30, 2024, the United Kingdom is set to enforce new customs import controls on food. This significant change in post-Brexit trade regulations aims to enhance food safety and ensure regulatory compliance for businesses importing food into the UK. SGS Trade Facilitation Services offers specialized support to help businesses smoothly navigate these new customs procedures, ensuring compliance and uninterrupted food supply chains.
What changes are coming on April 30, 2024?
Businesses importing food into the UK will need to adapt to several key changes, including:
- Mandatory entry of goods from the EU/EFTA through designated Border Control Posts (BCP) or Control Points (CP) for commodity-specific risk-based checks
- Existing inspections of high-risk plants and plant products from the EU, Switzerland, and Lichtenstein will move from Places of Destination (PoDs) to BCP and CP’s
- Necessary upload of IUU documents to the CHED import notification for consignments containing fish or fishery products
- For non-EU/EFTA risk-assessed countries, simplification measures include the removal of health certification for low-risk animal products and a reduction in checks for medium-risk items. High and medium risk plants will still require Phytosanitary Certificates (PC) and CHED import notifications on IPAFFS
